Tens of millions of people are preparing for extreme weather tonight and Thursday as large hail, damaging winds and heavy rainfall are expected to sweep the south. A dangerous tornado outbreak is expected in the Deep South and includes the potential for long-track intense tornadoes as well as damaging winds and large hail. There will be a continued threat of widespread severe storms for portions of Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee and Alabama.
NOAA's Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has issued its highest threat level forecast for severe weather, from parts of the lower-Mississippi Valley into Alabama. Showers and thunderstorms, occasionally strong to severe, are ongoing right now in the South. The threat of severe weather will continue to increase and spread across the region during the afternoon and evening hours. Supercell thunderstorms this afternoon and evening could produce long-track intense tornadoes, especially in high-risk areas white from northeast Louisiana and southeast Arkansas into central and northern Mississippi and central Alabama.
Meanwhile across the central High Plains, blizzard warnings are in effect for parts of Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Colorado. Residents should take extreme caution when leaving the home as strong winds and heavy snow will make driving and travel difficult.
