Most of the country will see winter temperatures above normal though slightly cooler than last year's very warm winter, according to the winter weather outlook announced today by NOAA. According to scientists at the NOAA Climate Prediction Center, who produce the outlook, drought conditions also are expected to improve in most areas of the Southwest, while some drought conditions are anticipated in parts of the Pacific Northwest.

For years WeatherTAP has offered a set of "winter" mosaic radar images that show not only the location of precipitation, but also the form, whether it be rain, snow, or mixed precipitation. Radar is definitely useful for determining the location and intensity of precipitation, but it is not as useful for determining its form. If radar data alone isn't sufficient for determining whether precip is rain or snow, how does WeatherTAP produce the winter mosaic? Good question....

Cassini stares deep into the swirling hurricane-like vortex at Saturn's south pole, where the vertical structure of the clouds is highlighted by shadows. Such a storm, with a well-developed eye ringed by towering clouds, is a phenomenon never before seen on another planet.
