New additions in RadarLab HD Version 1.0 Revision 22

A couple new features and a few changes have been made with Revision 22 of RadarLab HD. Click here to read more.

1. Local Storm Reports - NWS Local Storm Reports (LSR) have been added to this revision of RadarLab HD. You can turn these on by clicking on the "Local Storm Reports" check box listed under the "Data" tab. Place the mouse cursor over a LSR icon and you will see all the information about the LSR in a tool-tip format.

2. SpotterNetwork - RadarLab HD now supports the SpotterNetwork data. You can turn these on by clicking on the "SpotterNetwork" check box listed under the "Data" tab. As with the LSR data, you can place the mouse cursor over a SpotterNetwork icon and you will see all the information about the SpotterNetwork report in a tool-tip format. To read more about the SpotterNetwork click here.

3. Real-Time Lightning - Real-time lightning users can now change their area of coverage as often as they like. Click on the "Settings" button and then the "Lightning Settings" tab. Toward the bottom of this tab there is a place where you can change the center latitude and longitude point of your coverage area. This allows you to move your real-time lightning area to places where lightning is currently occurring. A "Lightning Box" check box has also been added to the RadarLab HD control panel. When selected, it will draw a red box around your real-time lightning coverage area. This will allow you to know exactly where your real-time coverage area is.

3. Resizing RadarLab HD window - A more intelligent algorithm is now being used to determine the zoom levels when you resize the RadarLab HD Window. When resizing the window, the first zoom level will not be "zoomed in" as far as in previous revisions.

Dan:

Phenominal! Just when I thought it couldn't get any better, this is one of the best updates yet. Thank You!

I hate to ask, but I have two requests that would make this the perfect program for me. Would it be possible to have the alarms/range rings work around the GPS location as opposed to a fixed lat/lon entered in the settings. Also, is there any way to center the GPS position and have the map move as your position moves so that you are always in the center of the screen. That would make this the perfect chase program.

Thank you again for all the hard work you have put into this program.

Dave:

I've been a customer and supporter for WxTAP for years (11 years now) but considered leaving because I wanted these features. Now you've gone and added it in. Awesome job guys!!

I'll be creating a thread about your new features at the Skywarn Forum later this morning.

Wow, just wow!

Clint Cooper:

How do you get set up for Local Storm Reports so they appear on your service?

Stacey Simmons:

Clint,

All you have to do is click on the "Local Storm Reports" check box that is listed under the Data tab in RadarLab HD. This will then show all the Local Storm Reports that are in the area you have loaded.

Austin:

I love the new updates and everything on the website. My question is, the NWS has got this Super Resolution radar up. It might help them but radar lab HD just doesn't seem as accurate with the Super Resolution, I was wondering if there was something you could do to fix that. Thanks for all the hard work you have put into this program.

Stacey Simmons:

Austin,

I'm not sure what you mean by the Super Resolution radar data not being as accurate in RadarLab HD. Actually, it is more accurate since there is more data in the image scan and less interpretation between points. This however makes the image seem not as "smoothed" in RadarLab HD as the non Super Resolution data. Since there is less interpretation between points in the Super Resolution the images appear a little more grainy and not as smooth looking. The image itself is actually more accurate even though it does not look as pleasing to the eyes.

Austin:

Thanks for answering so fast. I guess that does make since. Is there anything you could do to smooth the image out more, it doesn't look as good and now the pixels that border will jump sometimes 10 DBZ instead of changing 1 or 2 DBZ per pixel. Thanks so much.

Stacey Simmons:

Austin,

We are looking into it. Right now we have not been able to come up with a good solution that will allow the images to look as smooth as the non super resolution images. Again, this is because the super resolution images have more data points so less interpretation is occurring between those points. I can't promise anything, but we are trying to find some way to make the images appear smoother.

apeaslee:

these are great updates.but i would also like updates to the radar storm section when after the first blue box pops open telling me what the storm contains, well can you add in the 2nd blue box for me so i can see which citys will be on target when the strong-severe storm cell is expected to hit this city and that city with the time.because i dont see where i can click on the storm cell or hold the mouse down on the storm cell and follow in that path its going, then the blue box pops and says the time in which city will get by each storm cell during the next 30-60 minutes.

Stacey Simmons:

apeaslee,

The functionality you talk about is already in RadarLab HD. When you place your mouse over a storm cell, it displays the storm cell information in a blue box. If that storm cell is not a new storm cell AND there are cities within it's path of about 30 minutes out, then those cities are displayed in a second blue box along with an estimated time of impact. If the storm cell is new (it just has a centroid and no line showing what direction it is going) then it cannot be determined what cities are in it's path. Also, if the storm cell does show a direction line and there are no cities within about 30 minute from the storm's projected path, then there will be no cities shown. The cities that are used are the ones that get plotted when you click on the cities overlay. These are all the major and most of the minor cities.

apeaslee:

thanx alot stacey, that was real helpfull.thats exactly what i wanted and was looking for,to be able to click on the storm cells and see what they contain, then another box pops telling me the citys and time expected to hit those area during the next 30-60mins.i really like weathertap,im really happy i found it a couple of years ago.keep up the great work with the updates to the radar.my local news channel has hd vipir, will the hd radar in here ever be as good as hd vipir and titan

Adam:

Hi everyone,
I just had to reformat my computer (win XP Pro) and for some reason now when I try to open a RadarLab HD radar all it does is download a file to my desktop that I do not know what to do with and neither does my computer.
Prior to this I had a shortcut on my desktop that would open RadarLAB HD in a new window then I could navigate HD from there.

Any assistance is GREATLY appreciated.

Stacey Simmons:

Adam,

You will need to download Java before RadarLab HD will work. Go to www.java.com to download the latest version and then RadarLab HD should work.

TJ Kwiatkowski:

WeatherTap.com gang,

Absolutely love the product! One quick question/recommendation. Can you change the colors for watches/warnings/advisories? The reason I ask is I would like to change the colors to match what the National Weather Service uses when watches or warning are issued.

Thanks,
TJ

Stacey Simmons:

TJ,

A change is currently being made to RadarLab HD that will allow the user to change the colors of the Watches, Warnings and Advisories. This will be included in the next Revision of the RadarLab HD software.
