Legal Pre-flight Briefings

New Aviation Weather section

We are pleased to announce that WeatherTAP has received QICP certification from the FAA for the new Aviation Weather portion of our site. This means that weather data obtained from WeatherTAP now meets the criteria set forth in FAR Parts 121 and 135 as an "approved" weather source. Commercial air carrier operators no longer need to go offsite to get "legal".

Note there is no "approved" source requirement for part 91 operations. WeatherTAP data has always been acceptable for Part 91 operations.

A grant of QICP certification means that the FAA has evaluated our servers and network infrastructure and has determined that they meet the reliability, security, and accessibility demands of Advisory Circular (AC) 00-62. QICP status does NOT constitute an endorsement or certification of the weather data itself.

QICP status applies only to the Aviation Weather portion of the site. The non-aviation portions of the site are not certified. The QICP certified section is easy to identify because it has a white (rather than black) background and a masthead denoting the QICP status.

To gain certification, a new Aviation Weather page had to be constructed. The new page is encrypted for security and features a design that is purposefully different than the main WeatherTAP site to allow easy distinction between the certified and non-certified areas. The Aviation Weather page can be reached by simply clicking the Aviation heading on the drop-down menus, or directly at https://aviation.weathertap.com.

The Aviation Weather section is open to any WeatherTAP subscriber. You do not have to be a pilot to use it.

It would be helpful if the N number need not be entered each time one accesses the QICP site. Other providers don't require such an entry each time, and that is more convenient than what I see now on WeatherTap's new section.

Rob P:

Thank you for the feedback. You can set the N number so that it doesn't have to be entered each time. One the main site, go to the Service drop-down, then choose My Account->Edit User Information. The Default Aircraft Registration number is at the bottom of the page. Just add your N number there and it will automatically pre-fill in the Aviation Weather page.

We should probably make it so that it automatically saves that information every time you use Aviation Weather.

Rob P:

UPDATE

The N number is now remembered automatically.

Randal S.:

Does the certified sit create a record of the weather briefing? I liked the "route briefing" function of the old site - can't find it on the certified site, is it there?
Thanks

No, it's not there yet but we'll see what we can do.
