Color coded storm attributes added to RadarLab HD

RadarLab HD now portrays storm tracks in different colors depending on whether there is TVS or MESO indicator. Cells containing possibility of hail (POH > 0) are also coded.

In addition, you can now hover the mouse over a centroid to view detailed information about the cell.

This feature appears in Revision 3 of the RadarLab HD client. To see what revision you have, click the RadarLab HD icon in the upper righthand corner of the HD window. If you don't have revision 3 or greater, you may need to clear your Java cache and reload from the website.

To clear your cache, go to Windows control panel and open the Java CP. The General tab contains a button labeled "Delete files". Press that button and your cache will be cleared. Any desktop shortcuts to RadarLab HD will be removed in the process.

David A.:

HD rocks, thanks for the awesome program.

whats the newest update(s) for HD?
whats to come in the near future?

keep up the awesome work.

Rob P:

Thank you for the compliments. Revision 8 is the latest deployed version.

In the near future you'll see improvements to the map overlays. We're going to go to a vector-based overlay rather than the bitmaps. That improvement is currently in beta. Also, county names will become a separate overlay and roads will be split into two overlays as well.

Longer term, we'll be adding some additional radar data types and/or elevations.

Thanks again.

David A.:

thanks for your fast response,

anyways i have one more question,

will we be able to get a better quality zoom(smoother graphics) with the vector-based overlay? or is it just for the radar overlay to smooth the image out even more? i guess i just don't know what the vector-based overlay does... sorry for all the questions. i am just curious.

thanks for your time,

david

Rob P:

Yes, the vector-based maps will offer higher resolution at higher zoom levels.

Adrian:

Any date for when these vector-based maps will be in place?I look to being able to zoom and things not getting blurry.

Before hurricane season?

Rob P:

I think they are supposed to be deployed today.

On the topic of resolution: There is really no such thing as infinite resolution when you are talking about data in digital form. There will always be some limit on resolution whether the data is stored in vector or bitmap format. When playing connect-the-dots, the dots can never be infinitely close together. We do think that pushing the data over the wire in vector format will ultimately result in a nicer depiction however so that is why we changed it.

rich:

Hey Rob are you guys thinking about changing the lightning icons, the squares seem too big and cover the radar, maybe a lightning bolt.

Rob P:

The lightning icons are definitely big, but their size is set by our contract with the company that owns the lightning receivers, not by technical concerns. We may offer an option for enhanced lightning data, but it will probably add a bit to the subscription price for those who choose it.

Chris:

Hey are we going to be getting storm velocities and radial velocities like we have for the old radar lab, would be real nice to have.

Chris

Rob,

Something I wanted to pass along... I don't know if other users are having similar issues or not, but when accessing the warning text (clicking on the warning/advisory overlay) the text product window comes up empty - no text and no options to choose from in the "Product Times" menu. It started doing this yesterday and is doing the same today. It's nothing too important, but again, thought I would bring it to your attention.

Thanks!

Rob P:

Matt,

This is probably a versioning issue. A small correction was made to the way that WWA's were handled. The client should have automatically updated but we know that sometimes they do not. Just open your Control Panel, choose Java, then press the 'Delete Files' button at the bottom. This will flush the Java cache and will force a download of the latest client. That should probably resolve the issue.

Rob P:

Chris,

It's quite possible. We're constantly adding new features to HD.

Well we had a rather rough go of it here in Kansas this past weekend. I live just east of Greensburg around 50 miles. Got some super data on a lot of mesos......but I could have used "storm reletive" velocity data in the worst kind of way :). I had better data on my laptop then what I could get from local weather stations ..super product. I really need velocity data.

What would be really nice? How about the ablity to put velocity data overlayed on BR data. Set some transparency so you can view both types at the same time. would really help in TVS detection.

William,

The SCID data (storm table and storm track data in the RadarHD app) will both indicate when the TVS algorithm is tripped by the radar. I agree, however, that SR-velocity is a must-add...

Richard N. Haire:

This is a minor issue but "to me" the Interstate Highway ID's are much too big.....and it would be nice if they could be turned off if desired.

GREAT product!

Excellent add-on to the WeatherTap radar products. I have been really enjoying the New RadarLab HD. It runs smooth and, I can continue to run other tasks at the same time, which is a must for me.

Keep up the excellent work!

Jim Anderson:

Outstanding job on RadarLab HD. I had an idea on the lightning icons. Right now they basically cover everything below them. Could you make them partially transparent or translucent, with a solid outline, but still let the underlying radar come through?

Jim Anderson:

One more thing - I know that the minimum resolution is 1024x768, but could you shrink the vertical size by just a little bit to make room for the task bar to be showing?
